EICMA 2013 - Touratech

Harley folk love Chrome and Ducatisti love Carbon. Adventure Bikers love Farkles...

Farkles, you ask?

A Functional Sparkle, a Farkle is an aftermarket accessory that adds additional functionality to a bike. An aluminium GPS holder is a farkle. An LED light-strip that illuminates your engine isn't a farkle 'cos it's not particularly functional. It's just an accessory.

And the undisputed king of Adventure Bike farkling is...  Touratech.

Touratech farkles are designed and manufactured in an enchanted underground lair, under a mountain at a secret location in Bavaria.

Staffed almost entirely by Elves, Dwarves and Unicorns (Touratech is an equal opportunity employer and also employs some of the lesser known mystical creatures), Touratech uses only the latest in arcane manufacturing processes to produce the most highly sought after farkles in the realm.

This stuff is gorgeous!!

Unfortunately, due to the high wages demanded by highly skilled mystical artisans, the inaccessible nature of the enchanted lair and the ongoing security costs incurred in keeping the secret location, y'know... secret, Touratech farkles are a bit spendy...*

There are lots of be-farkled BMW GS Adventures kicking around Dublin. And they're all in pristine condition. I have a sneaking suspicion that despite being equipped with crash-bars and master-cylinder protectors and industrial GPS units and head-light guards, these bikes don't do any actual adventuring.

And I guess that's understandable. If I had a bike that cost nineteen and a half grand (Yup, that's what a GS1200 Adventure costs in Ireland), with another couple of grand in farkles, I'd be reluctant to take it off-road too...

*Joking aside, Touratech products are well designed, and well built and to see them on the internet or in a catalogue doesn't do them justice. They're beautiful!
