Dog CX
If you look to the column to the right, somewhere in the middle is a section called labels. If you're ever bored just sort of click around them - I find it a more interesting way to experience this blog than just looking at it day by day.
If you look closely, you'll notice a label for 'CX' and another for 'Dog', neither of which occur very often.
So maybe you'll understand why this picture of a dog standing atop a CX is too good to pass up!

Project Stealth KLR - Side-Stand Foot
This is a simple little mod that gets applied to almost all of my bikes. It costs virtually nothing, it weighs virtually nothing but it takes the hassle out of parking on soft surfaces.
It's a must for a dirt-bike and pretty useful on a road-bike.

KLR250 Strip Down
While I'm waiting for various KLR spare parts to make their way to Dublin, I'm stripping down the KLR to get it ready to send to Tallaght Powder Coating.
The last couple of things I've worked on (the Buell and the quad) have both been nightmares of seized bolts and broken parts - it got so bad that I can't even look at the Buell without loathing it! Even though all that's really left to do is adapt the Yoshimura can to fit the Buell header, I keep avoiding it 'cos it means trying to undo some of the bolts underneath the motor and I just don't want to go there again...
By comparison, the KLR is a delight to work on. The rear sub-frame unbolted easily allowing superb access to the (remains of the) airbox, the shock and the carb. So far, all of the bolts have unstuck easily and I haven't had to resort to a big hammer, blow-torch, welding rig or impact driver.
That's not to say I haven't uncovered any problems. At some point in the bike's life, the sump drain threads were ringed. And instead of going and getting a Timesert or a Helicoil at a motorcycle shop, the owner elected to tap out the drain hole and fit the biggest bolt in the world! It's 30mm across the flats! I expect it's off something agricultural...

How the fuck do you break an airbox?
I mean, think about it. It's right in the middle of the bike. In front of it, the engine. Above it, the seat. Behind it, the rear wheel. And all around it, the frame...

Boano Africa Twin Tank
This arrived in the post yesterday. It's a 42 litre fuel tank for a RD04 Africa Twin. I bought it from Rugged Roads and it was shipped directly from Boano in Italy. Rugged Roads are very pleasant and easy to deal with and the whole process only took a couple of weeks.
Boano was one of the Marathon Africa Twin pilots back in the Paris Dakar in the late eighties/nineties and has been manufacturing Marathon parts based on the original bikes for some time.

The standard tank holds about 23 litres and weighs about 9kg dry. The Boano tank surprisingly, weighs in at 8kg.

The profiles of the two tanks are similar, but the Boano tank seems to have additional volume to the rear of the filler cap.
