I watched this the other day and I enjoyed the hell out of it. It's slow and contemplative and has the authentic flavour of an actual road-trip. It reminded me a lot of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and a little of Easy Rider but it's much easier to digest than either.
Our hero is a returned veteran ostensibly on an implausible voyage to review all the bars in the American west. In reality, as in all good road movies, he's really just searching for himself.
Parting ways with his wife in the opening scene he sets off in search of meaning, wisdom and some new experiences. He encounters a variety of colourful characters and roadside bars (some good, some bad) along the way and eventually discovers some small purpose to his life.
The movie is a celebration of Americana and although set in contemporary times, it could just as easily take place in the '30s, or the '60s. Ultimately, its an easy, enjoyable, life-affirming film that will leave you feeling uplifted and planning your next road-trip.
