VHS Wednesday - ROTOR (1987)

Judging by this poster, ROTOR is the one of the greatest movies you never saw, falling somewhere between Dirty Harry and Mad Max.

Sadly in the world of VHS, cover art is no indication of quality content and ROTOR is almost entirely disappointing.

Not even nearly as good as the cover art would suggests, ROTOR has a similar premise to Robocop which it predated by a year.

A robot cop in development to deal with the perceived lawlessness of 25 years in the future, ROTOR is a sort of Judge Dredd/Terminator character whose prime directive is to Judge and Execute. As prime directives go, this one seems a little short sighted from a health and safety perspective but whatcha gonna do?

After a tragic accident with a Sony Walkman and some elecricity, ROTOR comes to life and goes on a really not very big rampage for a movie of this length. ROTOR and his matte black Yamaha XJ650 Turbo only feature for about 5 minutes of the total running time, terrorizing a young woman who in the scheme of things seems pretty nonplussed after ROTOR shoots her obnoxious boyfriend.

The rest of the time is taken up with a lot of dialogue (not all of which makes sense) between protagonist Coldyron and various female sidekicks. And there are a couple of subplots that don't do anything at all to move the game on, as Coldyron waits until 4 pm on Friday for a final showdown with ROTOR.

It's all a bit disappointing. It's not that you have expectations of high quality with a movie like this. But it would have been a much more memorable movie if it had just focused on ROTOR and his matte black Yamaha XJ650 Turbo with maybe some more wheelies and some more shooting things.
