So yesterday Evan came out to the workshop to fit a Yoshimura can to the Mercenary Sharktooth TDM. So using some metal from the scrap pile we welded a sleeve onto the can and fashioned an exhaust hanger...

This small section of scrap VW exhaust is overcome with excitement to discover it's destined to spend the rest of eternity as part of a Yoshimura can on Ev's Mercenary Sharktooth TDM Rat-bike. The excitement was contageous which is why this shot is out of focus. |

Using the EXPAND-O-MATIC 2000© Exhaust Swager to finesse the section of scrap VW exhaust. |
|
The VW exhaust section, invigorated by its experience with the EXPAND-O-MATIC 2000©, undergoes a panic-atack upon discovering it's about to get its ass welded to the Yoshi can. No-one thought to ask the Yoshi can how it was feeling... |
Imagine a shot of the Yoshi can with the new exhaust sleeve welded on! That would be terrific. Anyway, moving swiftly on...
|
The original plan was to weld a steel bracket to the steel frame of the TDM and to hang the Yoshi can off that. But then the reality of removing the tank and battery seemed like too much work (and welding the frame with the tank and battery in situ seemed too dangerous) so we decided to just use Rivnuts instead. Which had the advantage that we just had to fabricate a hanger, rather than a bracket AND a hanger Neat! |
Imagine some pictures of the fabrication of the 3mm aluminium exhaust hanger. Exciting. Anyway...
|
So there aren't any pictures of the exhaust hanger process. Essentially we pulled an old KLR navigation tower out of the the ally scrap-bin, cut it at a jaunty angle, drilled a couple of holes in it, and bent it. The whole process happened at the speed of light, hence no pics... |

The TDM back in its lair, about to get another sneaky bit of modification... |
|
During our Engineering Analysis, we neglected to account for the weight of the bracket. Upon testing, it was discovered that this subtle weight imbalance was causing the bike to pull to the right. Drilling the new exhaust hanger rectified this problem. However the reduction in drag on that side as a result of the holes now causes the bike to pull to the left. Tune in next week as we fit a modified air-brake off a Lockheed F-104 to resolve this issue... |
